What is an SEO cost calculator?

An SEO cost calculator estimates a monthly SEO budget by adding up the work involved: content × cost per piece, earned links × cost per link, technical and strategy hours × hourly rate, plus tools. A small business with 4 articles, 3 links and 9 agency hours a month comes to about $2,930 a month, or $36,660 in year one with an audit.

    How to use it

How to estimate your SEO budget

    1. Pick your business type. It loads a typical mix of content, links and hours as a starting point. Every number stays editable.
    2. Set competition and who does the work. Competition scales content and link volume. The delivery model sets a typical hourly rate: freelancer $70, agency $120, in-house $55 loaded cost.
    3. Adjust the line items. Change quantities and prices to match your plans or the quotes you have.
    4. Check a quote. Enter a monthly quote to see whether it sits below, in line with or above the deliverables-based estimate.
    5. Copy the budget and send it to the provider, asking them to confirm the same line items. That one step prevents most SEO billing disputes.
    The maths

    SEO cost formula

Monthly cost = (content pieces × cost per piece + earned links × cost per link) × competition factor + (technical + strategy + local hours) × hourly rate + tools

First-year cost = one-time setup + 12 × monthly cost. Competition factors: low 0.8, medium 1.0, high 1.35, applied to content and links because those are what competitive niches demand more of.

Worked example (the calculator’s default inputs)

A small business hires an agency at $120 an hour in a medium-competition niche.

    • Content: 4 articles × $250 = $1,000.
    • Links and digital PR: 3 earned links × $250 = $750.
    • Technical SEO 6 hours + strategy 3 hours = 9 × $120 = $1,080.
    • Tools: $100. Monthly total = $2,930, or $35,160 a year; with a $1,500 audit, the first year costs $36,660.
    • A $2,000 monthly quote is 32% below this estimate, so it is worth asking which deliverables are left out.

How much does SEO cost per month in 2026?

These are the starting presets in the calculator, priced at a $120 agency rate in a medium-competition niche. They are my planning defaults from real projects, not a survey, so swap in your own quotes.

    Freelancer

Lowest hourly cost and direct contact with the person doing the work. Best for small sites with a clear plan; capacity and breadth of skills are the limits.

    Agency

Higher rate, but you get a team covering technical, content and outreach, plus reporting. Insist on a deliverables list so the retainer is not a black box.

    In-house

Lower loaded hourly cost and deep product knowledge. Often combined with freelancers for content and outreach at scale.

    Buyer’s guide

Red flags in cheap SEO quotes

    Guaranteed rankings

Google itself warns that no one can guarantee a number 1 ranking. A guarantee usually signals tactics that put your site at risk.

Bulk links for a flat fee

“100 backlinks for $99” means links bought or built to manipulate rankings, which Google’s spam policies prohibit. Earned links cost far more per link for a reason.

    No deliverables list

If a provider cannot say how many pages, links and hours you get each month, you cannot judge value or hold them to it.

    Reports with only rankings

Rankings for obscure terms are easy to inflate. Ask for organic traffic, conversions and Search Console data alongside.

Before you sign: read Google’s own guide to hiring an SEO. It lists the questions to ask and the practices to avoid, and it is the best free due-diligence checklist available.

    FAQ

    SEO cost questions, answered

It depends on how much work is included. A small business programme with 4 articles, 3 earned links and about 9 hours of agency time a month costs roughly $2,900. Local businesses can spend less; ecommerce, SaaS and enterprise sites usually spend much more.

Add the cost of content (pieces × price), link building (earned links × cost per link), technical and strategy hours (hours × rate) and tools. This calculator also scales content and links for niche competition.

Freelancers usually charge lower hourly rates, so the same deliverables cost less. Agencies cost more but provide a team and reporting. Compare quotes on identical line items, not on the headline monthly fee.

Very cheap packages usually include little content, automated reports and bulk link building. Bought or automated links that manipulate rankings breach Google's spam policies and can harm your site.

Local SEO is usually cheaper because it focuses on a Google Business Profile, citations, reviews and a few location pages. The local preset in this calculator comes to about $2,320 a month at a $120 agency rate, with most of it in hours rather than content.

Ongoing work such as content and link earning suits a monthly retainer. Audits, migrations and technical fixes suit one-off projects. Many businesses combine an initial project with a smaller retainer.

Plan for at least 6–12 months before judging results, and often 12–24 months for payback on a profit basis. Use the SEO ROI Calculator to model when your budget pays back.

A clear list of monthly deliverables (pages, links, hours), what tools and reporting are included, who does the work, contract length and how success will be measured.

Per hour, usually yes, because a salaried employee's loaded cost is lower than agency rates. But one person rarely covers every SEO skill, so many in-house teams still use freelancers or agencies.

No. Google states that no one can guarantee a number 1 ranking. Treat ranking guarantees as a warning sign, not a selling point.
