What is an organic traffic calculator?

An organic traffic calculator estimates the monthly visits a keyword sends to your site by multiplying its search volume by the click-through rate for your Google position. For example, 10,000 monthly searches at position 3 (about 9.5% CTR on a plain results page) is roughly 950 visits a month. Ads and AI Overviews lower that figure.

    How to use it

How to estimate organic traffic for your keywords

    1. List the keywords one page targets. Use the main term plus close variants. For a whole site, run one forecast per page or cluster so the numbers stay realistic.
    2. Add monthly search volume. Take it from Google Keyword Planner or your keyword tool. Tool volumes are rounded averages, so treat them as estimates.
    3. Enter current and target positions. Current positions come from Search Console. Set targets you can justify with your content and authority, not wishful #1s.
    4. Pick the results-page layout. An AI Overview or ads above the results reduce the clicks any position earns. Search each keyword to see what appears.
    5. Read the uplift and the biggest opportunity. The table ranks keywords by the visits you would gain, which is your priority order.
    The maths

    Organic traffic formula

    Monthly visits = search volume × CTR(position) × layout factor × long-tail multiplier

CTR comes from the dexocalc 2026 planning curve (25% at position 1, 14% at 2, 9.5% at 3, 6.5% at 4, 4.8% at 5, falling to 1.5% at 10 and 0.35% at 20), interpolated for fractional positions. Layout factors: plain results 1.0, ads above 0.85, AI Overview 0.655, both 0.55. Positions 21–30 earn 0.3%, 31–50 earn 0.1%, and beyond 50 earn nothing.

Worked example (the calculator’s default keywords)

A coffee site targets five cold brew keywords with 61,600 combined monthly searches, on results pages that show an AI Overview.

    • “how to make cold brew” (22,200 searches) moves from #14 to #5: from 22,200 × 0.7% × 0.655 = 102 visits to 22,200 × 4.8% × 0.655 = 698.
    • “cold brew ratio” (6,600) moves from #8 to #3: from 95 to 411 visits.
    • “cold brew vs iced coffee” does not rank yet; reaching #6 would add 233 visits.
    • Across all five keywords, traffic rises from about 279 to 1,900 visits a month, roughly +1,621 (+581%), with “how to make cold brew” the biggest single opportunity.

How much traffic does each Google position get?

For a keyword with 10,000 monthly searches, the planning curve gives these monthly visits. The drop from #1 to #5 is bigger than the drop from #5 to #20, which is why the top three positions matter so much.

Why the long-tail multiplier exists: a page that ranks for its head keyword usually earns clicks from many related queries too. To find your own multiplier, divide a page’s total Search Console clicks by the clicks from its main keyword. Leave it at 1 when you are unsure; that keeps the forecast conservative.

    Forecasting well

Tips for a traffic forecast people will trust

    Use three scenarios

Run a conservative, an expected and an ambitious set of target positions. Stakeholders trust a range far more than a single optimistic number.

    Check the SERP

Search each keyword. If the page is full of videos, shopping results or a long AI Overview, pick the matching layout or lower your target.

    Mind seasonality

Keyword tools average volume over 12 months. “Cold brew” peaks in summer, so monthly traffic will swing around the forecast.

    Start from striking distance

Keywords at positions 8–20 with healthy impressions are the quickest wins. Filter Search Console by average position to find them.

    Validate with CTR

If your current CTR is far below the curve, fix the snippet first. The CTR Calculator shows whether each page earns its position’s share.

    Re-forecast quarterly

Replace the planning curve with your own average CTR by position once you have a few months of data. Your site’s numbers beat any industry curve.

    FAQ

    Organic traffic questions, answered

Multiply the keyword's monthly search volume by the expected click-through rate for your position. With 10,000 searches and a 9.5% CTR at position 3, you can expect about 950 visits a month, before adjusting for ads or AI Overviews.

It varies widely by query, but the top organic result typically earns roughly 20–40% of clicks on a plain results page. The dexocalc planning curve uses a conservative 25%, reduced when ads or an AI Overview appear above it.

Very little compared with the top. The planning curve gives position 10 about 1.5% CTR, or 150 visits a month from a 10,000-search keyword on a plain results page.

On average, yes. Ahrefs found the top result's CTR was 34.5% lower when an AI Overview appeared, which is why the calculator applies a 0.655 factor for that layout.

Search volumes are rounded averages, CTR varies by query and intent, seasonality shifts demand, and pages usually rank for many related queries. Treat the forecast as a planning range and compare it with Search Console.

Pages that rank for a main keyword often earn extra clicks from related searches. The multiplier scales the forecast for that. Set it from your own data by dividing a page's total clicks by the clicks from its head term.

Google Keyword Planner gives ranges for free and exact figures with active ad spend. Search Console impressions also show real demand for queries where you already appear.

It depends on competition and your site's authority. Improving a page already at #8–20 can take weeks; ranking a brand-new page in the top five for a competitive term often takes many months.

Yes, by adding the main keywords for each page, but forecasts are most reliable per page or per topic cluster. Very long lists tend to overstate traffic because some keywords compete with each other.

Only if you add them. Branded keywords usually have much higher CTRs than the curve suggests, so forecast them separately or exclude them for a cleaner SEO estimate.
