What is keyword value?
Keyword value is the monthly worth of ranking for a search term, usually measured as traffic value: search volume × click-through rate at your position × cost per click. It equals what you would pay to buy the same clicks as search ads. A 4,400-search keyword with a $32.50 CPC at position 5 (about 4.8% CTR) is worth roughly $6,860 a month on a plain results page.
How to calculate the value of a keyword
- Add keywords with volume and CPC. Cost per click (the top-of-page bid range in Google Keyword Planner) shows what advertisers pay for a visitor from that search, which is the market price of the traffic.
- Set a realistic target position. Value depends on clicks, and clicks depend on position. Position 1 earns roughly three times the clicks of position 3.
- Add difficulty if you have it. The calculator divides value by difficulty to rank keywords by return on effort, not just by size.
- Add conversion data for revenue. Conversion rate and value per conversion turn clicks into an estimate of sales or leads.
Keyword value formulas

The ad-equivalent value: what the same clicks would cost as paid search.
Value per difficulty point. Higher means more return for the effort.
Worked example (the calculator’s default keywords)
An invoicing app values five keywords on results pages with ads above the organic listings.
- “invoice template” has the most volume (49,500): at #3 it earns about 4,000 clicks, worth $8,394 a month at a $2.10 CPC.
- “accounting software for small business” has only 4,400 searches, but at a $32.50 CPC and #5 it is worth $5,834, and it is the hardest to win (KD 62).
- Together the five keywords are worth $21,919 a month, or $263,033 a year, in ad-equivalent value.
- Ranked by value per difficulty point, “invoice template” still comes first ($187 per KD point), followed by “freelance invoice generator” ($153), which earns far less but is much easier to win.
What keyword value tells you (and what it doesn’t)
CPC is a proxy for intent
Advertisers pay high CPCs for searches that turn into customers. A $30 CPC keyword with 1,000 searches can be worth more to a business than a $0.50 keyword with 50,000, even though its traffic value looks smaller.
Traffic value is not revenue
It shows what you would otherwise pay for the clicks. Whether those clicks earn money depends on your conversion rate, margins and offer, which is why the revenue estimate is separate.
Informational keywords still matter
Low-CPC “how to” queries build awareness and earn links that help commercial pages rank. Value them on their role in the funnel, not only on CPC.
Difficulty scores differ by tool
Each SEO tool calculates keyword difficulty its own way. Use one tool consistently, and treat the priority ranking as relative within your list.
| Keyword type | Typical CPC | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| “Best X” and “X software” (commercial) | High | Comparison and buying decisions; usually the most valuable per click |
| “X near me”, service + city (local) | Medium to high | Ready-to-buy local intent |
| “X template”, “free X” (tools and assets) | Low | High volume; good for sign-ups and links |
| “How to X”, “what is X” (informational) | Low | Awareness, links and AI Overview citations |

Keyword value questions, answered
Multiply monthly search volume by the click-through rate for your ranking position, then by the keyword's cost per click. That gives traffic value: what the same clicks would cost as paid search ads.
SEO traffic value is the estimated amount you would have to spend on search ads to get the same organic clicks. It is a common way to express the financial worth of rankings.
CPC reflects what advertisers are willing to pay for a visitor from that search, which makes it a market price for the traffic. High CPCs usually signal commercial intent.
No. A low-volume keyword with a high CPC and buying intent can be worth far more than a high-volume informational keyword with a low CPC.
One with meaningful value at a position you can realistically reach. Ranking keywords by value per difficulty point is a quick way to find those opportunities.
Google Keyword Planner shows top-of-page bid ranges. Most SEO tools also show an average CPC alongside search volume.
No. Traffic value is an ad-cost equivalent. Revenue depends on your conversion rate and value per conversion, which the calculator estimates separately.
Strongly. With the planning curve, position 1 earns about 25% of clicks on a plain results page versus 9.5% at position 3, so moving up multiplies value.
Keyword difficulty is an SEO tool's estimate, usually 0–100, of how hard it is to rank in the top 10, based mainly on the strength of the pages already ranking. Scales differ between tools.
Not automatically. Low-CPC informational keywords can attract links, build awareness and feed visitors to higher-value pages through internal links.
