How much does link building cost?

Link building cost is the total monthly spend on outreach time, content, tools and linkable assets, divided by the links you earn. Links earned = prospects × reply rate × link rate. For example, 200 prospects at an 8% reply rate and a 35% link rate earn 5.6 links a month; at $3,490 of spend, that is about $623 per earned link.

    How to use it

How to calculate link building cost

    1. Describe your outreach. Enter how many sites you contact a month and how long each takes to research, personalise and follow up.
    2. Add your conversion rates. Reply rate and the share of replies that turn into links. If you are new to outreach, start with 5–10% replies and 25–40% of replies converting, then replace them with your own numbers.
    3. Add content and asset costs. Guest articles, expert quotes or a data study that gives people a reason to link. A one-off asset is spread over the months you will pitch it.
    4. Plan the gap. Enter your referring domains and a competitor’s to see how many links a month you need, what that costs and how long it takes at your current pace.
    The maths

    Cost per earned link formula

Links = prospects × reply rate × link rate

The outreach funnel. Each step usually loses most of the people above it, which is why cost per link is often higher than expected.

Cost per link = (labour + content + tools + asset ÷ months) ÷ links

    Labour = prospects × minutes per prospect ÷ 60 × hourly rate.

Worked example (the calculator’s default inputs)

    • 200 prospects × 8% reply rate = 16 replies; 16 × 35% = 5.6 earned links a month.
    • Labour: 200 × 15 min = 50 hours × $40 = $2,000. Content: 5.6 × $150 = $840. Tools: $150. Asset: $3,000 ÷ 6 = $500.
    • Total $3,490 a month, so the cost per earned link is $623, and you need about 36 prospects for every link.
    • Closing a 180-domain gap in 12 months needs 15 links a month (about $9,350 at this cost per link). At the current pace of 5.6 links it would take 33 months.

    Earned links vs paid links

Google’s spam policies treat buying or selling links that pass ranking credit, excessive link exchanges and large-scale guest posting with keyword-rich anchors as link spam. Paid or sponsored links are allowed only when they are marked with rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow”.

How to earn links more cheaply

    Build one strong asset

Original data, a free tool or a definitive guide gives people a reason to link without being asked. Spread over many pitches, its cost per link keeps falling.

    Target fewer, better prospects

Sites that already link to similar resources reply far more often. Personalised pitches to 100 relevant sites beat templates to 1,000.

    Reclaim unlinked mentions

Sites that mention your brand without linking convert at much higher rates. A short, polite request is often enough.

    Fix broken backlinks

Links pointing to deleted pages on your site are wasted. Redirect them to the best live page to recover their value at almost no cost.

    Track replies, not just links

If reply rate falls, the pitch or targeting is the problem. If replies don’t convert, the asset or the offer is.

    Budget it properly

    FAQ

    Link building cost questions, answered

It depends on your outreach efficiency. Divide total monthly spend on outreach labour, content, tools and assets by the links you earn. With the calculator's defaults, 5.6 links a month for $3,490 works out at about $623 per earned link.

Cost per link = (outreach labour + content + tools + linkable asset cost per month) ÷ links earned. Labour is prospects × minutes per prospect ÷ 60 × hourly rate.

It varies widely by niche and targeting. Cold, generic outreach often gets low single-digit reply rates, while well-targeted, personalised pitches can do much better. Track your own rate and use it here.

Buying or selling links that pass ranking credit is listed as link spam in Google's spam policies. Paid and sponsored links must use rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".

Because most outreach doesn't convert. If 1 in 36 prospects links to you, every link carries the cost of researching and pitching the 35 who didn't.

There is no fixed number. Compare referring domains with the pages that rank for your keyword, and remember relevance and quality matter more than raw counts. Use the link gap planner to budget for closing the gap.

Content created to attract links on its merits, such as original research, a free tool or calculator, a data visualisation or a definitive guide. One strong asset can be pitched for months.

Genuine articles for relevant sites can build reputation and referral traffic. Large-scale guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor links are treated as link spam, so keep it occasional and editorial.

Links are usually discovered within weeks, but the ranking effect builds over months and depends on the rest of your SEO. Plan link programmes over at least 6–12 months.

Raise reply rates with better targeting, create a stronger linkable asset, reclaim unlinked brand mentions and fix broken backlinks. Each improves the funnel without adding outreach hours.
