How do you calculate the number of years between two dates?
Subtract the start year from the end year, then subtract one more if the end date falls earlier in the year than the start date’s month and day. That gives the full years. From September 15, 2008 to November 3, 2026 is 18 years, 1 month and 19 days, or 18.13 years in decimal form (6,623 days ÷ 365.2425). For whole years only, such as “how many years since 1990”, subtract the years: 2026 − 1990 = 36.
Four ways to express “how many years”
Full (completed) years
Use this for ages, anniversaries and service awards. It only counts once the anniversary date has passed: 18 years, not 18.9.
Years, months, days
The exact calendar breakdown. It matches how ages and tenure are written on documents.
Decimal years
Days ÷ 365.2425, the average Gregorian year. Useful for charts, interest and averages.
Year subtraction
Just end year minus start year. It is fine for “years since 1990”, but it can be off by one for exact dates.

As of 2026, it has been 26 years since 2000. For an exact date, such as January 1, 2000, use ‘Between two dates’ to get the months and days too.
That’s the average length of a Gregorian year once leap-year rules are included (97 leap days every 400 years). Dividing by 365 slightly overstates long spans.
Enter the hire date and today’s date (or the end date). ‘Full years completed’ is the number most service awards and benefits use.
