The range, month by month
Each segment is sized by how many days of the range fall in that month.
How do you calculate the number of days between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one in days. Count the days left in the start month, add every full month in between, then add the days into the end month. Leap days are included. From November 3, 2026 to December 25, 2027 there are 417 days: 59 weeks and 4 days, or 1 year, 1 month and 22 days. The end date is not counted unless you tick “include the end date”.
Should you include the end date?
Exclude it (default)
Use this for durations, countdowns and elapsed time. Monday to Wednesday is 2 days, which is how age, interest and “days until” are counted.
Include it (+1 day)
Use this when every calendar date counts: hotel nights versus days on a trip, days of leave, or a festival that runs from the 1st to the 3rd (3 days).
Formula and worked example
Days = (End date − Start date) in days [+1 if the end date is included]Weeks = ⌊Days ÷ 7⌋ weeks and (Days mod 7) daysHours = Days × 24 · Minutes = Days × 1,440Worked example: November 3, 2026 → December 25, 2027. Rest of November 2026: 27 days. December 2026: 31 days. All of 2027 up to December 25: 359 days. Total: 27 + 31 + 359 = 417 days.
Days in each month, with leap years
Leap years from 2024 to 2060: 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, 2044, 2048, 2052, 2056, 2060. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400 (so 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 won’t be).
| Month | Days | Day of year it starts (common year) |
|---|---|---|
| January | 31 | 1 |
| February | 28 (29 in leap years) | 32 |
| March | 31 | 60 |

| May | 31 | 121 |

Days between dates: frequently asked questions
Enter both dates above. The calculator subtracts them, including leap days, and shows the total in days, weeks, months and years. By default the end date is not counted.
By default it includes the start date but not the end date, so the 1st to the 3rd is 2 days. Tick ‘include the end date’ to count both, which makes it 3 days.
The ‘Inside this range’ panel shows weekdays (Monday–Friday) and weekend days. To remove public holidays as well, use the business days calculator.
Tap ‘Today → Christmas’ and the calculator fills in the dates. For a live countdown with hours and minutes, use the days until calculator.
Yes. Any two dates from year 1 onward work, and every leap year in between is counted correctly.
Subtract the cells: =B1-A1 gives the days between two dates. DATEDIF(A1,B1,”d”) gives the same, and adding 1 includes the end date. This calculator matches Excel’s default.
Almost always because one tool includes the end date and the other doesn’t. Toggle the option to compare.
