How do you calculate business days between two dates?

Count every calendar day in the range, then subtract weekend days (Saturdays and Sundays) and any public holidays that fall on weekdays. From November 2 to December 31, 2026 (both dates counted) there are 60 calendar days. Take away 16 weekend days and 3 federal holidays (Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas) and you get 41 business days. The calculator does this for any range and shows every skipped day on a calendar.

How to use the business days calculator

      1. Pick a mode. Use Count to find the number of working days between two dates. Use Add / subtract to find the date that is N business days after or before a date, such as a delivery date or a filing deadline.
      2. Choose whether to count the start and end dates. For “how many working days do I have from Monday to Friday?”, count both. For “how many days after the order date?”, leave the start date out.
      3. Set your workweek. Monday to Friday is the default. Tap the day buttons for a Sunday–Thursday week, a 6-day week or a 4-day schedule.
      4. Skip holidays. US federal holidays use the observed dates published by OPM: a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday, a Sunday holiday on Monday. Add your own closures or PTO as extra days off.
      5. Read the calendar. Green is a business day, grey a weekend, orange a holiday and purple your own day off. The bar chart shows how many business days fall in each month.

      Business days formula

Business days = Calendar days − Weekend days − Weekday holidays − Other days off Calendar days = End date − Start date + 1 (when both dates are counted) Add N days = Step forward one day at a time; count only working days until N

Worked example: “ships in 5 business days.” You order on Friday, November 20, 2026. Day 1 is Monday the 23rd, then the 24th and the 25th. Thursday the 26th is Thanksgiving, so it is skipped. Friday the 27th is day 4 and Monday the 30th is day 5. Expected ship date: Monday, November 30, 2026, 10 calendar days later. Switch to Add / subtract mode to check it.

US federal holidays 2026 and 2027 (observed dates)

These are the eleven legal public holidays under 5 U.S.C. 6103, with the day federal offices actually close when a holiday falls on a weekend. Banks follow the Federal Reserve’s schedule, which can differ when a holiday falls on a Saturday.

      Business day mistakes to avoid

Counting the start date for a deadline

“Within 3 business days of Monday” usually means Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Day 1 is the next working day, not the day of the event.

Using the actual holiday instead of the observed one

July 4, 2026 is a Saturday, so the federal day off is Friday, July 3. A plain weekday count would miss it.

Assuming “business days” is the same everywhere

Banks, courts, carriers and other countries keep different holiday lists. Add those days as extra days off for an exact answer.

      Forgetting the year-end jump

When January 1 falls on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on December 31 of the previous year. It happens again in 2027.

      Business days: frequently asked questions

There are 250 Monday-to-Friday working days in 2026 after removing the 11 observed US federal holidays, and 249 in 2027. The month-by-month table on this page lists each month.

Usually, yes. In the US a business day normally means Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. Some businesses, and many countries in the Middle East, work Sunday to Thursday, so the calculator lets you choose any working days of the week.

Only if you want it to. To count every working day in a period (for example, leave days), turn on both ‘count the start date’ and ‘count the end date’. For deadlines and delivery estimates, the start date is normally not counted. Add / subtract mode always starts counting from the next working day.

Not in a standard Monday-to-Friday week. For a 6-day workweek, switch on Saturday in the working-days buttons and the calculator will count it.

The calculator uses the federal observed-date rule from OPM: a holiday on Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and a holiday on Sunday is observed on the Monday after. That observed weekday is the one skipped.

Count 5 to 7 working days starting the day after your order, skipping weekends and holidays. An order placed on a Friday before a Monday holiday can take more than 9 calendar days. Enter your order date in Add / subtract mode to get the exact dates.

Start from the given date and move forward one day at a time, counting only working days, until you reach the number you need. Weekends, holidays and your extra days off are skipped. The calculator does this instantly and lists every holiday it skipped.

Yes. Use ‘Extra days off’ to add any date, such as a company shutdown, the day after Thanksgiving, or vacation days. They show in purple on the calendar and are left out of the count.

Calendar days count every day, including weekends and holidays. Business days count only working days. For a straight day count with no exclusions, use the days between dates calculator.
