Zulu Time ConverterZulu Time Now, UTC to EST/CST/PST & Military Time Zones

Zulu time is UTC: the military name for the time at Greenwich (0°), with no daylight saving. To convert Zulu to U.S. Eastern time subtract 5 hours in winter (EST) or 4 in summer (EDT). Use the live clock and converter below for any date, U.S. zone or overseas duty station, with the military date-time group.

Daylight saving rules come from the IANA time zone database built into your browser; official U.S. time is at time.gov.

What is Zulu time?

Zulu time is the military and aviation name for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the time at 0° longitude with no daylight saving. “Z” is the letter for the zero-offset zone, and Zulu is its NATO phonetic word, so 1500Z is read “fifteen hundred Zulu.” Using one reference clock lets units, ships and aircraft in different time zones coordinate without conversion errors.

How to convert Zulu time to your local time

  1. Find your UTC offsetU.S. Eastern is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer. Our converter applies daylight saving for the exact date you pick.
  2. Add the offset to ZuluFor zones west of Greenwich the offset is negative: 1500Z − 5 hours = 1000 EST.
  3. Check the dateIf the result drops below 0000 or goes past 2359, the local date moves back or forward a day. 0200Z on the 5th is 2100 EST on the 4th.
  4. Going the other waySubtract your offset: 1800 local in Germany in summer (UTC+2) is 1600Z.

Formula

local time = Zulu time + UTC offset of the zone (on that date) Zulu time = local time − UTC offset DTG format: DDHHMMZ MON YY e.g. 301500Z OCT 26

Worked example: A brief is set for 141300Z JAN 27. At Fort Bragg (Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5) that is 0800 on January 14. In Ramstein, Germany (UTC+1 in winter) it is 1400 the same day.

Zulu time to U.S. time zones

U.S. zoneStandard timeDaylight timeExample
EasternEST (R): Zulu − 5EDT (Q): Zulu − 41500Z = 1000 EST / 1100 EDT
CentralCST (S): Zulu − 6CDT (R): Zulu − 51500Z = 0900 CST / 1000 CDT
MountainMST (T): Zulu − 7MDT (S): Zulu − 61500Z = 0800 MST / 0900 MDT
PacificPST (U): Zulu − 8PDT (T): Zulu − 71500Z = 0700 PST / 0800 PDT
AlaskaAKST (V): Zulu − 9AKDT (U): Zulu − 81500Z = 0600 AKST / 0700 AKDT
HawaiiHST (W): Zulu − 10No daylight time1500Z = 0500 HST

U.S. daylight saving time runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe it.

Military time zone letters (A to Z)

Each whole-hour zone has a letter and phonetic name. J (Juliett) means local time and is not tied to an offset. Half-hour zones such as India (UTC+5:30) are usually written with the next letter and an asterisk, or simply in Zulu.

Zulu vs UTC vs GMT

UTC

The world’s time standard, kept by atomic clocks and adjusted with leap seconds. Zulu time equals UTC.

GMT

Greenwich Mean Time, the older astronomical standard. In daily use it matches UTC within a second, but the U.K. switches to BST (UTC+1) in summer.

Mistake: assuming Zulu changes in summer

Zulu never observes daylight saving. Your offset to it changes instead: Eastern goes from −5 to −4.

Mistake: forgetting the date

Evening times in the U.S. are often the next day in Zulu. 2000 EDT on the 10th is 0000Z on the 11th.

Zulu time FAQ

The live clock at the top of this page shows the current Zulu (UTC) time to the second, with the matching military date-time group and the time in your own zone.

Zulu time is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The military assigns the letter Z to the zero-offset zone at Greenwich, and Zulu is the phonetic word for Z, so 0900Z is said “zero nine hundred Zulu.”

Subtract 5 hours during Eastern Standard Time (November to March) or 4 hours during Eastern Daylight Time (March to November). 1800Z is 1300 EST or 1400 EDT.

Subtract 6 hours for Central Standard Time or 5 hours for Central Daylight Time. 1800Z is 1200 CST or 1300 CDT.

Subtract 8 hours for Pacific Standard Time or 7 hours for Pacific Daylight Time. 1800Z is 1000 PST or 1100 PDT.

For everyday use, yes: Zulu, UTC and GMT show the same time. The difference is that the U.K. moves to British Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer, while Zulu never changes.

No. Zulu time is fixed all year. What changes is your local offset from it.

A DTG is the military format for a time stamp: two-digit day, four-digit time, zone letter, month and year, such as 301500Z OCT 26 for 1500 Zulu on October 30, 2026.

Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5) is R, Romeo. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC−4) is Q, Quebec. Central Standard is S (Sierra) and Pacific Standard is U (Uniform).

J stands for local time wherever the observer is. It is used when a time should be read in each person’s own zone rather than a fixed offset.

I have not served in the military, so this tool does not run on opinion: the converter uses the IANA time zone rules built into every modern browser, so daylight saving changes are applied for the exact date you choose, and I checked the results against time.gov.
