What is military time?
Military time is a 24-hour clock that counts the hours of the day from 0000 (midnight) to 2359, with no AM or PM. Morning hours keep their number with a leading zero (8:00 AM is 0800), and afternoon hours add 12 (3:00 PM is 1500). It is written as four digits without a colon and spoken as “fifteen hundred hours.” The U.S. armed forces, hospitals, aviation, police and 911 dispatch use it because it removes any AM/PM mix-up.
How to convert standard time to military time
- Morning (12:00 AM to 11:59 AM)Drop the colon and AM, and add a leading zero if needed. 7:30 AM becomes 0730. Midnight (12:00 AM) becomes 0000.
- Noon hour (12:00 PM to 12:59 PM)Keep the hour as 12. 12:15 PM becomes 1215.
- Afternoon and evening (1:00 PM to 11:59 PM)Add 12 to the hour. 4:45 PM becomes 1645, and 11:20 PM becomes 2320.
- Military time back to standardIf the hour is 13 or higher, subtract 12 and add PM (1900 is 7:00 PM). If it is 00, use 12 AM. If it is 01 to 11, add AM.
The formula
Worked example: 9:05 PM → 9 + 12 = 21, so the military time is 2105, said “twenty-one zero five hours.” Going back, 0630 has an hour below 12, so it is 6:30 AM.

How to say military time
Say the hour, then “hundred hours.” 0600 is “zero six hundred hours” and 1800 is “eighteen hundred hours.” Many units shorten 0600 to “oh six hundred.”
Say the hour, then the minutes. 1545 is “fifteen forty-five hours.” Single-digit minutes take a zero: 0905 is “zero nine zero five hours.”
0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 the end of the same day. Orders and logs normally use 0000 or 2359 to avoid confusion over which date is meant.
Military time is often paired with a zone letter, such as 1500Z for UTC. Our Zulu time converter handles that step.
Mistakes to avoid
Noon is 1200. Midnight is 0000. Only the midnight hour (12 AM) becomes 00.
Only PM hours from 1 to 11 get +12. 9:00 AM is 0900, not 2100.
Military time is written as four digits (1430). The colon form (14:30) is the civilian 24-hour clock.
The correct form is “fourteen hundred hours” or simply “fourteen hundred.”

Military time FAQ
1700 in military time is 5:00 PM. Subtract 12 from any military hour of 13 or more and add PM: 17 − 12 = 5.
1300 is 1:00 PM. Military time adds 12 to every afternoon hour, so 1 PM becomes 13 hundred hours.
If the first two digits are 13 to 23, subtract 12 and add PM (2130 is 9:30 PM). If they are 00, use 12 and AM (0045 is 12:45 AM). From 01 to 11 add AM, and 12 is PM.
Both are used. 0000 is the first minute of a new day and 2400 is the end of the previous day. Most military orders and logs use 0000 or 2359 to avoid any doubt about the date.
12:30 AM is 0030. The midnight hour is always 00 in military time.
Say “zero eight hundred hours”, or informally “oh eight hundred.” Times on the hour end in “hundred.”
Yes, they count the same 24 hours. The difference is style: military time is written without a colon (1430) and spoken in hundreds, while the civilian 24-hour clock uses a colon (14:30).
It removes any confusion between AM and PM. With operations, flights and patient care running around the clock, 0700 and 1900 can never be mixed up.
2100 is 9:00 PM. Subtract 12 from 21 to get 9, then add PM.
Rarely. Standard military time is four digits for hours and minutes. When seconds matter, a six-digit form such as 154530 (15:45:30) is used.
