What is a military Julian date?

A military Julian date is a four-digit code made of the last digit of the year followed by the day of the year (001 to 365, or 366 in a leap year). October 30, 2026 is day 303, so its military Julian date is 6303. The U.S. military uses it on supply requisitions (MILSTRIP document numbers), maintenance records and shelf-life labels because it is short and sorts in date order. Some systems use five digits (YYDDD) or seven (YYYYDDD).

How to calculate a Julian date

Count the day of the yearAdd the days in each full month before your date, then add the day of the month. October 30: 273 days in January to September + 30 = 303.
Pad to three digitsWrite days below 100 with leading zeros: February 5 is 036, January 9 is 009.

Mistakes to avoid

Dropping leading zeros

January 9, 2026 is 6009, not 69. The day part must always be three digits.

Mixing up the decade

YDDD only stores one year digit, so 6303 could be 2016 or 2026. Use context (or YYDDD) for anything older than ten years.

Forgetting leap years

After February 29 in 2028, every day number is one higher than in 2027. A static chart from a non-leap year will be off by one.

Confusing it with the Julian calendar

The Julian calendar is the old Roman calendar, now 13 days behind ours. A Julian date code has nothing to do with it.

The box at the top of this page shows today’s military Julian date in your time zone. For October 30, 2026 it is 6303 (day 303 of 2026), or 26303 in five-digit form.

The first digit is the last digit of the year and the next three are the day of the year. 7045 is the 45th day of 2027, which is February 14, 2027.

January 1 is always day 001, so it is 6001 in 2026 and 7001 in 2027.

December 31 is day 365 in a normal year (6365 for 2026) and day 366 in a leap year (8366 for 2028).
