VA Disability Calculator2026 VA Disability Pay With VA Math, Bilateral Factor & Dependents
The VA combines ratings with whole-person math, adds a bilateral factor for paired limbs, rounds to the nearest 10% and pays the 2026 rate for that rating and your dependents: $1,132.90 a month at 50% and $3,938.58 at 100% for a veteran alone. Add your ratings and dependents to see your combined rating, monthly and yearly tax-free pay, the math step by step and what it takes to reach the next 10%.
Rates from the VA’s 2026 compensation rate tables; combining rules from 38 CFR 4.25 and 4.26.

How VA disability compensation is calculated in 2026
The VA combines your individual ratings with “VA math” (each rating applies only to the remaining healthy percentage), adds a 10% bilateral factor for paired limbs, rounds to the nearest 10% to get your combined rating, then pays the 2026 monthly rate for that rating and your dependents. Rates rose 2.8% on December 1, 2025: $180.42 at 10%, $1,132.90 at 50% and $3,938.58 at 100% for a veteran alone.
Dependents add money only from 30% upward. Compensation is tax-free and paid monthly, usually on the first business day of the following month.
VA math in one example
Ratings are applied from highest to lowest. A combined value ending in 5 rounds up, so 65 becomes 70 and 64 becomes 60.

Effective December 1, 2025. The calculator also covers dependent parents, children 18 to 23 in school and a spouse receiving aid and attendance.
What changes the amount
When both arms, both legs or paired muscles are rated, those ratings are combined first and 10% of that value is added before combining with the rest.
SMC for loss of use, aid and attendance or housebound status is paid on top of these rates and is not modeled here.
If service-connected conditions keep you from working, Individual Unemployability pays at the 100% rate even with a lower rating.
Military retirees under 50% have retired pay reduced by the VA amount unless CRSC applies; at 50% and up, CRDP restores it.

VA disability FAQ
For a veteran alone: $180.42 at 10%, $356.66 at 20%, $552.47 at 30%, $1,132.90 at 50%, $1,808.45 at 70% and $3,938.58 at 100% a month, effective December 1, 2025.
Ratings are applied from highest to lowest against your remaining healthy percentage, then the result is rounded to the nearest 10. 50% and 30% make 65, which rounds to 70%.
When paired extremities (both arms, both legs) are rated, those ratings are combined and 10% of the combined value is added before combining with your other ratings.
Yes, from a 30% combined rating and up: a spouse, children, school-age children, dependent parents and a spouse needing aid and attendance each add an amount.
$4,318.99 a month in 2026, with $109.11 more for each additional child under 18.
No. It is exempt from federal and state income tax.
December 1, 2025, with a 2.8% cost-of-living increase, first paid in January 2026.
Because each rating applies only to the healthy part left over. Two 50% ratings combine to 75 (rounded to 80%), not 100%.

I have not served in the military, so this tool does not run on opinion: the rate table is the VA’s December 1, 2025 table entered cell by cell for every dependent status, and the combining logic follows 38 CFR 4.25 and the bilateral factor in 38 CFR 4.26, tested against the VA’s own worked examples.
