How VA back pay is calculated

VA back pay (retroactive pay) is the compensation owed from your effective date until the VA starts paying the new rate. Payment begins on the first day of the month after the effective date, and each month is paid at the rate in force at the time, so months before December 1, 2025 use lower, pre-COLA rates. For an increase, you are owed the difference between the new and old rate.

Your effective date is usually the date the VA received your claim or intent to file, or the day after discharge if you filed within a year of leaving service. It is printed on your decision letter.

The formula

First paid month = month after your effective date For each month until regular payments start: owed += rate(new rating, that year) − rate(old rating, that year) Earlier years’ rates = 2026 rate ÷ the COLAs since that year

Prior years are rebuilt from the 2026 table using each December COLA, which matches the VA’s published past rates to within cents. The VA’s own figure comes with your award letter.

Offsets

Military retired pay, separation pay, severance pay and drill pay for the same days can reduce or delay back pay.

Staged ratings

The VA can assign different ratings for different periods. Run each period separately and add them.

I am a pharmacist turned tech geek, and I design, code and test every calculator on DexoCalc myself. I have not served in the military, so this tool does not run on opinion: each month uses the 2026 VA rate scaled back by the published December COLAs, and the start-of-pay rule follows 38 CFR 3.31; I checked the rebuilt 2025 rates against the VA’s past-rates page.
