Military to Civilian Salary CalculatorCivilian Equivalent Salary, Tax Advantage & Regular Military Compensation

Because BAH and BAS are tax-free, a civilian needs a higher salary than your military pay to take home the same money; this calculator finds that break-even salary with 2026 tax brackets. Enter your grade, years, BAH and filing status, add the benefits you would have to buy, and see the civilian salary you need and how much of it is the tax advantage.

Basic pay from the DFAS 2026 tables; tax brackets and standard deduction from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32.

How to compare military pay with a civilian salary

Your civilian equivalent salary is the taxable pay a civilian would need to take home the same cash you do. Because BAH and BAS are tax-free, it is always higher than your basic pay plus allowances; DoD calls this extra the “federal tax advantage” and includes it in Regular Military Compensation (RMC).

This calculator works out your military take-home with 2026 federal brackets, then searches for the civilian salary that gives the same take-home after federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and your state rate. Add the monthly value of benefits you would have to buy as a civilian, such as health insurance, to see the full picture.

The method

Military cash = basic + special pay − taxes on them + BAH + BAS Civilian salary S solves: S − federal tax(S) − FICA(S) − state(S) = military cash + benefits you’d buy Tax advantage = S − (basic + special + BAH + BAS)

Federal tax uses the 2026 brackets and the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly). FICA is 7.65% on wages.

What a civilian offer has to cover

Health care

TRICARE Prime has no premium for active-duty families. An employer family plan often costs the employee several hundred dollars a month.

Retirement matching

BRS gives up to 5% of basic pay in TSP contributions. Compare with the employer 401(k) match.

State taxes

Your military state of legal residence may not tax military pay; a civilian job taxes you where you live and work.

Leave

30 days of paid leave a year is generous by private-sector standards. Ask how much a civilian offer includes.

Military vs civilian pay FAQ

Add basic pay, BAH, BAS and special pays, then add the tax advantage of your tax-free allowances and the value of benefits a civilian employer may not cover. This calculator does it by finding the civilian salary with the same take-home.

RMC is DoD’s measure of military pay: basic pay, BAH, BAS and the federal tax advantage from receiving allowances tax-free.

An E-6 with over 8 years ($4,612.80 basic pay) and $2,300 BAH, married, needs about $110,000 a year as a civilian in a state with a 4% income tax, once $500 a month of benefits is included, versus $88,677 of gross military compensation.

Because about a third of most members’ pay comes as tax-free allowances. A civilian must earn more before tax to keep the same amount.

Yes, as the monthly premium you would pay for similar civilian coverage. Enter it in benefits you’d buy.

Not automatically. If a civilian employer matches less than the 5% BRS gives, add the gap to benefits you would buy.

2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, plus 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare on civilian wages.

I have not served in the military, so this tool does not run on opinion: the calculation uses the full DFAS 2026 basic pay tables and the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32, solved by search rather than a rule of thumb.
