How military pay is calculated in 2026

Military pay is basic pay from the 2026 DFAS table for your grade and years of service, plus tax-free Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS), plus any special or incentive pays. Basic pay rose 3.8% on January 1, 2026; BAS is $476.95 a month for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers.

Only basic pay and most special pays are taxed. BAH and BAS are not, which is why a service member’s pay is worth more than the gross number suggests. This calculator shows both the gross and an estimated take-home figure.

The formula

Gross monthly pay = basic pay + BAH + BAS + special pays Taxable pay = basic pay + taxable special pays Take-home = gross − federal & state tax − FICA (7.65% of taxable) − TSP − other deductions

Years of service are counted from your Pay Entry Base Date (PEBD). “Over 4” means more than four years, so a member with exactly four years is still paid at the “over 3” step.

I am a pharmacist turned tech geek, and I design, code and test every calculator on DexoCalc myself. I have not served in the military, so this tool does not run on opinion: basic pay comes from the complete DFAS 2026 tables (every grade and every years-of-service column), BAS from the 2026 DFAS rates, and the tables on this page are generated from the same data the calculator uses.
