How do you calculate the age difference between two people?
Subtract the older person’s date of birth from the younger person’s date of birth, the same way you would calculate an age. Days first, then months, then years, borrowing when needed. Alex, born April 12, 1990, and Sam, born September 30, 1994, are 4 years, 5 months and 18 days apart (1,632 days). The gap never changes, but it matters less and less as both people get older.

Why a fixed age gap feels smaller every year
A 4-year gap is a third of a 12-year-old’s life but less than a tenth of a 45-year-old’s. The ratio below shows how the same gap shrinks relative to the older person’s age.

No. The difference between two birth dates is fixed. What changes is how big it feels: a 5-year gap is huge between a 10- and a 15-year-old and barely noticeable between 50 and 55.
It’s an old social rule of thumb: the youngest ‘acceptable’ partner is half your age plus seven years. For a 40-year-old that is 27. It has no scientific basis. The calculator shows it only for adults, as a curiosity.
No. The calculator always finds the older person and reports the gap the same way. Use the Swap button to switch the names around.
