Adds six months to the birthday. If that day doesn’t exist (for example August 31 → February 31), it falls on the last day of the month.

How do you calculate a half birthday?

Add six months to the birthday. A March 21 birthday has its half birthday on September 21, and a July 4 birthday on January 4. Month-end birthdays move to the last day of the shorter month: an August 31 birthday becomes February 28 (February 29 in leap years), and a December 31 birthday becomes June 30. If you’d rather split the year exactly in half, the “exact midpoint” method counts 182 or 183 days forward instead.

Half birthday chart by month

The half birthday is always six months later. The day number only changes for 29th–31st birthdays that land in a shorter month.

Two ways to count, explained

6 calendar months (most common)

Same day number, six months later, matching how people say “half a year from now”. Most families and schools use this for half-birthday celebrations.

Exact midpoint

Half of the days between this birthday and the next: 182 days (or 183 when a leap day falls in between). It can differ from the calendar method by a day or two.

Summer birthdays at school

Kids with July or August birthdays often celebrate a half birthday in January or February, while school is in session. That is the most popular reason to look one up.

Baby milestones

A baby’s “half birthday” is the 6-month mark, a common time for a check-up, starting solids and photos.

Half birthdays: frequently asked questions

Six months after your birthday. Enter your birthday and the calculator shows your next half birthday, the weekday it falls on and how many days are left.

February 28, or February 29 in a leap year, because February has no 31st. Birthdays on August 29 and 30 also land on February 28 in common years.

Not always. Six calendar months can be 181 to 184 days. If you want the exact midpoint of the year, switch to ‘Exact midpoint’, which counts half the days to the next birthday.

Your age plus a half. On the half birthday after turning 8 you are 8½. The calculator shows the half age you will reach.

June 30, because June has only 30 days.

Yes, especially children with summer or holiday birthdays who want to celebrate at school, and parents marking a baby’s first six months.
