How the Marine Corps composite score (JEPES) is calculated

Since 2021 the Marine Corps composite score for promotion to corporal and sergeant is the JEPES Performance Evaluation System (PES) score: four pillars of up to 250 points each (warfighting, physical toughness, mental agility and command input) plus up to 100 bonus points, capped at 1,000. If your PES meets or beats the monthly cutting score for your MOS and you meet time-in-service and time-in-grade, you are selected for promotion. The old composite built from rifle, PFT, CFT, MCMAP, time in grade and pros and cons no longer applies.

    The five JEPES components

    PillarWhat countsFormulaMax
WarfightingRifle score percentile (vs. peers of your rank) + MCMAP belt value(rifle + belt) × 1.25250

Worked example: LCpl competing for Cpl

    Rifle at the 70th percentile with a green belt: (70 + 100) × 1.25 = 213. PFT 80th and CFT 75th percentile: (80 + 75) × 1.25 = 194. MarineNet 40, one in-grade course 5, two in-service courses 10, MOS quals 30: 85 × 1.25 = 106. Marks of 4.4, 4.3 and 4.5 average 4.4 × 50 = 220. No bonus. PES = 213 + 194 + 106 + 220 = 733.

How to raise your JEPES score

    1. Max out MarineNet firstIt is 40 raw points (50 PES points) you fully control. Check course CEU values on MarineNet.
    2. Earn your MOS qualificationsMOS courses and quals are worth up to 100 raw points, the biggest single piece of mental agility.
    3. Take off-duty college classesEach course is 5 raw points (6.25 PES), up to 20 in grade and 20 in service, plus 10–20 for a degree.
    4. Treat rifle, PFT and CFT as promotion eventsThey are scored as percentiles against your peers, so every point above average moves you past other Marines.

    Marine composite score FAQ

Since 2021 it is the JEPES PES score: warfighting ((rifle percentile + MCMAP value) × 1.25), physical toughness ((PFT + CFT percentiles) × 1.25), mental agility (MOS quals, MarineNet, degree and courses × 1.25), command input (average marks × 50), each capped at 250, plus up to 100 bonus points.

The minimum PES score needed for promotion to corporal or sergeant in your MOS for a given month. Manpower publishes new cutting scores monthly; if your PES meets it and you meet TIS and TIG, you are selected.

1,000 points: 250 for each of the four pillars plus up to 100 bonus points, capped at 1,000 in total.

For promotion to corporal, a green belt (or higher) is worth the full 100 belt value, which becomes 125 PES points. For promotion to sergeant a green belt is 50 and you need a black belt for the full 100.

MarineNet informal PME is worth up to 40 raw points (50 PES points), based on the CEU value of completed courses in grade.

An associate degree is 10 raw points and a bachelor’s 20 (the maximum), which become 12.5 and 25 PES points. Individual off-duty courses add 5 raw points each, up to 20 in grade and 20 in service.

Your reporting seniors give marks of 0.0 to 5.0 for MOS/mission accomplishment, leadership and character. The in-grade averages are multiplied by 50 and averaged, for up to 250 points.

I am a pharmacist turned tech geek, and I design, code and test every calculator on DexoCalc myself. I have not served in the military, so this tool does not run on opinion: the pillar formulas, belt values and mental agility points follow MCO 1616.1 and MARADMIN 046/24, the percentiles come from your own JEPES dashboard, and I checked the math against the worked example in the order’s worksheet.
