Decimal hours
7.75
How do you convert hours and minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. With seconds, divide them by 3,600 too. To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 8.4 hours = 8 hours + 0.4 × 60 = 8 hours 24 minutes. Payroll uses decimal hours because you can multiply them directly by an hourly rate.
Minutes to decimal hours chart (1–60 minutes)
Look up the decimal for any number of minutes, then add it to your whole hours. Example: 6 h 20 min → 6 + 0.33 = 6.33.

Decimal-time mistakes on timesheets
Writing 7:45 as 7.45
7.45 hours is 7 h 27 min. At $20/h, writing 7.45 instead of 7.75 under-pays $6 for the day.
Rounding too early
Convert the weekly total, not each day rounded to 0.1. Rounding every day can cost or add up to 15 minutes a week.
Hundredths vs tenths
Some payroll systems use tenths of an hour (6-minute blocks). The “nearest 1/10 hour” tile shows that value.
Seconds ignored
For call-centre or billing logs, 1:02:30 is 1.0417 h, not 1.02. Include the seconds.

Decimal time: frequently asked questions
7.75 hours, because 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75.
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 min = 0.25 h, 30 min = 0.5 h, 20 min = 0.33 h. The chart above lists every minute from 1 to 60.
Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 for minutes. 5.6 hours = 5 h + 0.6 × 60 = 5 h 36 min. Switch to ‘Decimal → time’ above.
6 minutes. Many payroll systems track time in tenths of an hour, which are 6-minute blocks.
Convert to decimal hours first, then multiply by your hourly rate: 7:45 at $22/h = 7.75 × 22 = $170.50. Enter your rate to see it.
Yes. Total the week with the time card calculator, which shows hours:minutes and decimal hours together.
