How do you calculate hours between two times?

Convert both times to minutes after midnight, subtract the start from the end, and add 24 hours if the end is earlier, which means the span crossed midnight. Then subtract any unpaid break and convert back. From 9:15 AM to 5:40 PM is 8 hours 25 minutes, or 8.42 decimal hours. A night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours.

Hours formula with a worked example

Minutes = (End − Start) in minutes (+1,440 if End ≤ Start)Net = Minutes − Break minutesDecimal = Net ÷ 60 · Pay = Decimal × Hourly rate

Example: 9:15 AM = 555 minutes and 5:40 PM = 1,060 minutes. 1,060 − 555 = 505 minutes = 8 h 25 min. 505 ÷ 60 = 8.42 hours. At $18.50/h that is $155.71.
