Tariff CalculatorPrice impact of 2026 tariffs on what you pay
A tariff price impact calculator estimates how much a tariff adds to what you pay in store. Increase ≈ Price × Imported share × Tariff × Pass-through. A $999 laptop with 60% imported cost and a 10% tariff rises about $59.94, plus extra sales tax.

How Tariffs Change the Price You Pay
A tariff is a tax the importer pays on foreign goods; shoppers feel it when the importer or retailer raises the shelf price to cover it. If a $999 laptop’s imported cost is 60% of its price and a 10% tariff is passed on at cost, the price rises by about $59.94. Because sales tax is charged on the higher price, you also pay about $4.80 more in sales tax at 8%.
Tariff Price Impact Formulas
Tariff added at cost
Increase = Price × Import share × Tariff × Pass-through$999 × 0.60 × 0.10 × 1.00 = $59.94.
Tariff marked up
Increase = Price × Tariff × Pass-throughIf the seller keeps its percentage margin: $999 × 0.10 = $99.90.
Extra sales tax
Extra tax = Increase × Sales tax rate$59.94 × 0.08 = $4.80.
Yearly cost
Yearly = (Increase + Extra tax) × Purchases per yearUseful for items you buy repeatedly, such as tires or small appliances.
US Tariffs in 2026: What Changed
US tariff policy shifted several times in 2026. The Penn Wharton Budget Model estimated the average effective US tariff rate at about 7.1% in August 2026, and the Yale Budget Lab estimated in July 2026 that current-law tariffs cost the average household roughly $1,100 a year.
| Date | Change | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 20, 2026 | Supreme Court rules the IEEPA tariffs unlawful | IEEPA tariffs repealed; about $166 billion collected is subject to refund to importers |
| Late Feb 2026 | 10% global tariff under Section 122 | Temporary replacement tariff on most imports |
| Jul 24, 2026 | Section 122 tariff expires | Section 301 tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on imports from 60 economies take over, with product exemptions |
| Ongoing | Section 232 sector tariffs | Steel and aluminum duties remain the highest category (raised from 25% to 50% in June 2025) |
| Ongoing | USMCA exemption | Most qualifying imports from Canada and Mexico enter duty-free |
Tariff rules change often. Check the latest official guidance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection before making import decisions.
Tariff Impact on Common Purchases
Price increases assuming imported cost is 60% of the shelf price and full pass-through. The real effect depends on where the product is made, its components and how much the seller absorbs.
| Item | Price | 10% at cost | 10% marked up | 25% at cost | 25% marked up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone | $799 | $47.94 | $79.90 | $119.85 | $199.75 |
| Laptop | $999 | $59.94 | $99.90 | $149.85 | $249.75 |
| TV | $1,200 | $72.00 | $120.00 | $180.00 | $300.00 |
| Washing machine | $900 | $54.00 | $90.00 | $135.00 | $225.00 |
| Bicycle | $600 | $36.00 | $60.00 | $90.00 | $150.00 |
Why the Real Price Change Can Be Smaller (or Bigger)
Partial pass-through
Retailers and foreign suppliers often absorb part of a tariff, especially in competitive categories.
Domestic prices rise too
When imports get pricier, some domestic producers raise prices as well, even without paying the tariff.
Exemptions & trade deals
USMCA-qualifying goods and exempted products may face no tariff at all.
Refunds go to importers
IEEPA refunds are paid to the importers who paid the duties. Whether shoppers see lower prices is up to sellers.
Timing
Stores sell existing inventory first, so price changes can lag tariff changes by months.

Tariff Calculator FAQs
Importers pay the tariff, and many pass some or all of it on through higher shelf prices. Domestic competitors may also raise prices. Sales tax is then charged on the higher price.
Multiply the shelf price by the imported share of its cost, the tariff rate and the share passed on. A $999 item with 60% imported cost, a 10% tariff and full pass-through rises by about $59.94.
After the Supreme Court struck down the IEEPA tariffs on February 20, 2026, a temporary 10% Section 122 tariff applied until it expired on July 24, 2026. Section 301 tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on imports from 60 economies replaced it, and Section 232 sector tariffs, such as on steel and aluminum, remain in place.
The Penn Wharton Budget Model estimated the average effective tariff rate at about 7.1% in August 2026, up from 6.7% in July.
The Yale Budget Lab estimated in July 2026 that current-law tariffs cost the average household about $1,100 a year. Your own cost depends on what you buy.
IEEPA tariff refunds are paid to the importers who paid the duties, not directly to shoppers. Whether consumers see lower prices depends on sellers.
Yes, indirectly. Sales tax is a percentage of the final price, so any tariff-driven price increase also increases the sales tax you pay.
Pass-through is the share of a tariff that ends up in the consumer price. Full pass-through means shoppers bear all of it; partial means sellers or foreign suppliers absorb some.
Retailers that price as a percentage markup on cost apply that markup to the tariff-inflated cost, so the shelf price can rise by more than the tariff itself.
Most goods that qualify under the USMCA trade agreement enter the US without these tariffs, though some sector tariffs can still apply.
