How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the pre-tax bill by the tip percentage. For 20%, move the decimal point one place left and double it: on an $80 meal, 10% is $8, so 20% is $16. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure: $8 + $4 = $12. To split, add the tip to the full bill (tax included) and divide by the number of people. An $86.40 bill with $6.40 tax and a 20% tip on the $80 subtotal comes to $102.40, or $51.20 each for two people.

How much to tip in the US: a quick guide
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15–20% of the pre-tax bill (20% for good service) |
| Food delivery | 15–20%, with a minimum of a few dollars |
| Bartender | $1–2 per drink, or 15–20% of the tab |
| Taxi or rideshare | 15–20% |
| Hair stylist or barber | 15–20% |
| Hotel housekeeping | A few dollars per night, left daily |
| Counter service / takeout | Optional; 10% or rounding up is common |
Outside the US, tipping customs vary widely. In much of Europe a service charge is often included and rounding up is enough, and in Japan tipping is generally not expected. Check whether “service” already appears on the bill before you add a tip.

Tipping: frequently asked questions
$10, for a total of $60. Quick method: 10% of $50 is $5, and doubled that’s $10.
Etiquette guides say to tip on the pre-tax amount. Many people tip on the total for simplicity, which adds only a little. Toggle the option to see both.
Add the tip to the full bill and divide by the number of people. Set ‘Split between’ above. For uneven orders where people pay for what they ate, use the split bill calculator.
In the US, 15–20% for sit-down service is standard, 20% for good service and more for exceptional service or large groups. Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for parties of six or more.
Choose ‘Round up each person’s share’ to get even amounts per person, or ‘Round up the total’ for a clean final bill. The effective tip percentage after rounding is shown on the receipt.
It’s optional in the US. Around 10% is generous for counter service or takeout. Delivery is different: there, 15–20% is customary.
