How do you split a bill fairly when people ordered different things?

Add up each person’s own items, split shared items equally among the people who shared them, then give each person tax and tip in proportion to their share of the subtotal. In the example above, Alex’s food comes to $31.50 out of an $84 subtotal (37.5%), so Alex also pays 37.5% of the tax and tip: $31.50 + $2.52 tax + $5.67 tip = $39.69. If everyone ordered about the same, an even split is simpler.

Worked example: three friends, one bill

PersonOwn items + shared shareSubtotalTax 8%Tip 18%Pays
AlexBurger 16 + ⅓ pizza 8 + ½ drinks 7.50$31.50$2.52$5.67$39.69
SamPasta 18 + ⅓ pizza 8 + ½ drinks 7.50$33.50$2.68$6.03$42.21
PriyaSalad 11 + ⅓ pizza 8$19.00$1.52$3.42$23.94
Total$84.00$6.72$15.12$105.84

An even split would charge each person $35.28, so Priya would subsidize the others by $11.34. Splitting by item avoids that.

Tips for splitting without awkwardness

Agree before ordering

“Even split or by item?” takes ten seconds at the start and saves a debate at the end.

Share tax and tip proportionally

A $10 salad shouldn’t pay the same tip as a $40 steak. Proportional sharing is what the calculator does.

Watch for automatic gratuity

Many restaurants add 18–20% for groups of six or more. Set tip to 0% if it’s already on the bill.

Settle up straight away

Copy the result into the group chat so everyone pays the same evening.

Splitting bills: frequently asked questions

Enter each item with its price and tap the names of the people who shared it. The calculator adds each person’s items, splits shared items equally, and divides tax and tip in proportion to each person’s subtotal.

Proportionally is fairer. Each person pays tax and tip on what they actually ordered. Splitting evenly makes light eaters subsidize big orders.

Switch to ‘Split evenly’, enter the subtotal and the number of people, and add tax and tip percentages. Each person’s share includes their part of tax and tip.

Etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, which is the default here. Untick the box to tip on the total including tax.

Up to 10 people in itemized mode and 50 in even mode.

Yes. Use items for anything shared, such as groceries, a holiday rental or a gift, and set tip to 0%. For splitting rent by room size, use the rent split calculator.
