What are vehicle & transportation calculators?

Vehicle and transportation calculators are free tools that turn driving numbers into decisions — fuel and trip cost, MPG, EV charging cost, tire and wheel fitment, towing limits, car depreciation, IRS mileage reimbursement and LTL freight class. Each DexoCalc tool shows its formula, the official data source it uses and a worked example, so you can check the math yourself.

The core formulas and 2026 numbers behind these tools

Most vehicle math comes down to a handful of formulas. Here they are in plain sight, with the official figure each one depends on.

What you’re working outFormulaKey number / source
Miles per gallonMPG = miles driven ÷ gallons usedCompare with your car’s EPA rating on FuelEconomy.gov
Trip fuel cost(distance ÷ MPG) × price per gallonUse your local pump price on the day you drive
Mileage reimbursement (US)business miles × IRS rate72.5¢/mile Jan 1–Jun 30, 2026; 76¢/mile from Jul 1, 2026; charity 14¢ (IRS)
Metric fuel useL/100 km = 235.21 ÷ US MPGUK MPG uses imperial gallons: L/100 km = 282.48 ÷ UK MPG
EV charging costkWh added ÷ charging efficiency × $/kWhAssume ~85–90% efficiency for home Level 2 (DOE AFDC guidance)
Tire diameter (inches)(width × aspect% × 2 ÷ 25.4) + rimSize format per tire sidewall marking, e.g. 265/70R17
Freight densityweight (lb) ÷ (L × W × H in ÷ 1,728)13-tier NMFC density scale since July 19, 2025; ≥50 lb/ft³ = Class 50

Figures checked October 29, 2026. Rates and pump prices change — every calculator lets you override the default with your own number.

Worked examples

Four real questions, answered with the math shown

“What will a 300-mile drive cost?”

At 28 MPG the trip uses 300 ÷ 28 = 10.71 gallons. At $3.20 a gallon:

≈ $34.29 in fuel

“How tall is a 265/70R17 tire?”

Sidewall = 265 × 0.70 = 185.5 mm, twice that is 371 mm, ÷ 25.4 = 14.61 in, plus the 17 in rim:

≈ 31.6 inches tall

“What do 1,200 work miles pay back?”

Miles driven from July 1, 2026 onward use the updated IRS rate: 1,200 × $0.76.

= $912.00

“What does it cost to add 60 kWh at home?”

60 kWh ÷ 0.90 efficiency = 66.7 kWh from the wall, × $0.16 per kWh:

≈ $10.67 per charge
How we build them

How every DexoCalc vehicle calculator is built and checked

A calculator is only useful if you can trust the answer. This is the process each tool on this page goes through before it’s published.

Start from the source

Formulas and defaults come from published standards and agencies — EPA, IRS, DOE, NHTSA, NMFTA and SAE — never from another calculator.

Show the math

Each page prints its formula, assumptions and a worked example in plain text, so you can verify the result by hand.

Test against known answers

Results are checked against official tables and real-world cases (EPA ratings, sidewall specs, IRS examples) before launch.

Re-check when rules change

When the IRS moves the mileage rate or NMFTA updates classes, the affected tools and this page are updated and re-dated.

I’m a professional pharmacist turned tech geek, and I’ve spent more than 13 years designing websites and building interactive tools. I’m not a mechanic, and I won’t pretend to be one. What I bring to these vehicle calculators is a pharmacist’s habit of getting the numbers exactly right: every formula here is taken from the agency or standard that defines it, tested against published examples, and shown on the page so you never have to take my word for it.

FAQ

Vehicle & transportation calculator questions

Divide the trip distance by your car’s MPG to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. A 300-mile trip at 28 MPG and $3.20 a gallon costs about $34.29. The Fuel Cost Calculator does this for one-way or round trips and lets you use your real-world MPG instead of the window-sticker figure.

The IRS set the 2026 business standard mileage rate at 72.5 cents per mile from January 1, then raised it to 76 cents per mile for miles driven from July 1, 2026, citing higher fuel costs. The charitable rate stays at 14 cents per mile because it is fixed by law. Our Mileage Reimbursement Calculator applies the correct rate to each half of the year.

Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then refill. Divide the miles driven by the gallons it took to refill. Averaging two or three tanks gives a far more reliable figure than a single fill-up or the dashboard display.

For most drivers who charge at home, yes — often by a wide margin per mile. The gap shrinks if you rely on public DC fast chargers, which can cost several times more per kWh than home electricity. The EV vs Gas Calculator compares both on your own mileage, electricity rate and gas price.

The speedometer error equals the percentage change in tire diameter. A tire that’s 3% taller makes the speedometer read 3% low — so showing 60 mph while you’re really doing about 61.8 mph. Many fitment guides suggest staying within about 3% of the original diameter; the Speedometer Calibration Calculator shows your exact figure.

For density-rated items, divide the shipment’s weight in pounds by its volume in cubic feet (inches L × W × H ÷ 1,728) and match the result to the NMFC density scale. Since July 19, 2025, that scale has 13 tiers, with 50 lb/ft³ or more landing in Class 50. Some commodities still carry their own NMFC rules, so always confirm with your carrier.

No. You also have to stay within the truck’s payload (people, cargo and tongue weight count against it), GVWR, rear axle rating and GCWR — the combined weight of truck and loaded trailer. Payload is often the limit people hit first. The Towing Capacity Calculator checks all of them together.

Yes, every tool is free with no sign-up. Each one uses formulas from official agencies and standards and shows its working, but results are estimates. Real fuel use, values and towing safety depend on your specific vehicle, so check your owner’s manual, your carrier or a qualified professional for decisions that matter.
