What ERA Actually Measures
Earned Run Average answers a narrower question than most people expect: not “how many runs scored while this pitcher was on the mound,” but “how many runs scored that were actually the pitcher’s fault.” A dropped fly ball, a bad hop, a throwing error at first base — none of those count against ERA. What’s left over, the earned runs, gets scaled up to a full 9-inning game so a two-inning reliever and a seven-inning starter can be compared on equal footing.
That scaling step is the part most people skip when they do this by hand, which is exactly why an ERA calculator saves time: it’s not really the division that’s hard, it’s remembering to multiply by nine (or seven, or six) first.
The ERA Formula
Standard baseball example: 65 earned runs over 200 innings pitched → (65 × 9) ÷ 200 = 2.93
The “innings per game” multiplier changes by level: 9 for MLB and most college baseball, 7 for softball and many high school leagues under NFHS rules, and 6 for Little League and other youth formats. The same raw stat line can produce a noticeably different ERA depending on which multiplier applies, which is why this calculator lets you pick the format explicitly instead of assuming 9 by default.
Why Innings Pitched Notation Trips People Up
Box scores don’t write innings pitched as a true decimal. A line that reads “6.1 IP” does not mean six-and-one-tenth innings — it means six full innings plus one out, which is one-third of an inning. “6.2 IP” means six innings plus two outs, or two-thirds. Plugging 6.1 straight into a calculator as 6.1 (instead of converting it to 6.333) is one of the most common ERA math mistakes, and it quietly throws the whole result off. Earned Runs vs. Unearned Runs
A run is “earned” if it would reasonably have scored even with error-free defense behind the pitcher. A run is “unearned” if a fielding error, passed ball, or catcher’s interference extended the inning or put a runner on who otherwise would have been out. The scorer, not the pitcher, makes this judgment call in real time, which is part of why ERA — while far better than raw runs-allowed — still isn’t a perfect measure of pure pitching skill. Advanced metrics like FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) exist specifically to strip out the parts of ERA that depend on the defense and ballpark behind a pitcher.

Notice that relievers are judged on a slightly different curve than starters at the same raw number — a 3.50 ERA reliever pitching mostly low-leverage innings reads very differently than a 3.50 ERA closer entering with the game on the line. Role and situation matter as much as the digit itself.
Common ERA Calculation Mistakes
- Treating .1 and .2 as decimals instead of thirds of an inning — the single most common error, covered above.
- Including unearned runs in the numerator, which artificially inflates the number and misrepresents a pitcher who was let down by their defense.
- Forgetting to adjust the multiplier for softball (7) or Little League (6) games, which produces a lower ERA than the true 9-inning-equivalent rate.
- Comparing small samples directly — a reliever’s ERA over 8 innings can swing by a full run on a single bad outing; season-long ERA is far more stable than a one-appearance snapshot.
A Short History of ERA
The National League began officially tracking earned run average in 1912, making it one of baseball’s oldest continuously recorded statistics. Ed Walsh holds the lowest career ERA in recorded history at 1.82, set during the dead-ball era (1904–1917) when offense across the entire league was dramatically lower than today. Since the rules changed after 1920 and offense picked up league-wide, Mariano Rivera’s career ERA of 2.21 stands as the lowest of the modern era — a number made even more remarkable given he compiled it as a closer over parts of three decades, almost entirely in high-leverage, late-inning situations.
