Per-person amounts follow the USDA FSIS turkey buying guide: 1 lb per person for a whole bird, ¾ lb for a bone-in breast and ½ lb boneless.
How much turkey per person?
Buy 1 lb of whole turkey per person (raw weight, bone in), or 1½ lb per person if you want generous leftovers. Children need about half that. A whole bird is roughly half bone, so 1 lb raw gives each guest about 8 oz of cooked meat. For 10 adults, buy a 10–12 lb turkey, or 15 lb for leftovers.

Each child counts as half an adult portion.
Shopping range: 14 – 16 lb (6.4 – 7.3 kg)

Next step: Thaw this bird in the fridge for 4 days, then plan your oven time.

How the turkey size calculator works
We start from the USDA buying guide and adjust it for the things that actually change how much gets eaten: children, appetite and leftovers.
The shopping range runs from the calculated weight, rounded up to the next half pound, to 2 lb above it, because supermarket birds come in 1–2 lb steps. Above 24 lb we recommend two smaller birds.
10 adults, 2 children, average appetite, some leftovers
- Portions: 10 + (2 × 0.5) = 11
- Pounds per portion: 1.0 + 0.25 = 1.25 lb
- Raw weight: 11 × 1.25 = 13.75 lb, so buy 14–16 lb
- Cooked meat: about 7 lb. That’s 8 oz for each adult plate, plus about 24 oz left over, or around 8 sandwiches.
- A 14 lb bird needs about 4 days to thaw in the fridge and 3 h 35 min unstuffed at 325°F.
Choosing the right bird
- Fresh or frozen? Buy a fresh turkey no more than 1–2 days before cooking. A frozen one can be bought weeks ahead, but needs about 1 day of fridge thawing for every 4–5 lb.
- Two 12 lb birds beat one 24 lb bird. They cook in about 3¼ hours instead of 5, the breast dries out less, and you get four drumsticks.
- Check the oven first. Most standard 30-inch home ovens take a bird up to about 22–24 lb in a roasting pan. Measure your oven before you buy.
- Heritage turkeys are leaner, with more bone and less breast meat. Add about 0.25 lb per person.
- Mostly white-meat eaters? Pair a smaller whole bird with a bone-in breast instead of buying one huge turkey.
Big birds and leftovers: a food-safety view
Buying too much turkey often turns into a food-safety problem. A giant bird takes longer to thaw and longer to heat through, and the leftovers sit out while everyone is too full to clear up. That’s exactly when Clostridium perfringens, the classic “holiday buffet” bacterium, multiplies.
Size the bird for what your household can eat within 3–4 days, or plan to freeze portions on the same day. Carve the meat off the bone before refrigerating, and use shallow containers so it cools fast. Get it all into the fridge within 2 hours of serving.
Feeding someone who is pregnant, over 65 or immunocompromised? Reheat leftovers to 165°F rather than serving them cold.

Turkey size FAQs
Allow 1 lb of whole turkey per person for dinner, or 1½ lb per person if you want plenty of leftovers. For a bone-in breast allow ¾ lb per person, and for a boneless breast or turkey roast ½ lb per person. Count children under 12 as half a portion.
For 10 adults, buy a 10–12 lb whole turkey for dinner only, or a 13–15 lb bird for a few leftovers. With hearty eaters and lots of leftovers, go up to 17–18 lb.
A 12–14 lb turkey feeds 12 average adults, with a little meat to spare. If you want leftover sandwiches all weekend, buy 16–18 lb.
Twenty adults need about 20 lb of whole turkey for dinner alone. For leftovers too, roast two 14–16 lb birds rather than one 30 lb bird. Two smaller turkeys cook faster and more evenly and fit a standard oven together or one after the other.
A whole turkey gives roughly 50% of its raw weight as cooked, edible meat once you remove the bones, skin and cooking juices. A 14 lb bird gives about 7 lb of carved meat, enough for 14 generous 8 oz plates.
Children under 12 usually eat about half an adult portion, so allow ½ lb of whole turkey per child. Teenagers often eat as much as adults or more, so count them as adults.
For more than about 20 lb of turkey, two smaller birds are usually better. They cook faster and the breast stays moister, you get twice the legs and wings, and you can cook one a day ahead. One large bird looks more impressive, but it’s harder to cook evenly.
Most standard 30-inch residential ovens hold a turkey of about 22–24 lb in a roasting pan, with room for air to circulate. Smaller and wall ovens may top out around 18–20 lb. Measure the inside height with the rack in its lowest position before you buy.
Cooked turkey keeps for 3–4 days in the refrigerator at 40°F or below, or 2–6 months in the freezer for best quality. Refrigerate it within 2 hours of serving, cut off the bone, in shallow containers.
For Thanksgiving on November 26, 2026, buy a frozen turkey any time beforehand. Start thawing it in the fridge by about November 21–23, depending on size. Buy a fresh turkey no earlier than Tuesday, November 24.
